    A cam is a kind of mechanical interface. Examples of ‘lower pair’ interfaces include simple joints like spherical and cylindrical bearings, and planar surfaces mated together. A cam is a ‘higher pair’, which functions in a more complex manner.

    Essentially, you have a flat surface which is pressed against the cam. The cam is an oblong sort of disk which rotates in an off-center manner. That pushes the flat surface up and down.

    This mechanism is used to open and close valves in a car engine.
